A cooing, babbling baby doll — an unlikely subject of scrutiny — has proven to be a hot-button provocateur, prompting debate about religion and influence among holiday shoppers.

Mattel's Little Mommy Cuddle 'n Coo doll giggles and says "mama" and babbles — though some consumers believe she also says "Islam is the light."

"I think it's crazy, I would never buy a doll like that," said Helena Pauls of Winnipeg. "It's … pushing religion on kids subconsciously."

Other consumers disagree, saying the recording is too muffled to distinguish. Shopper Ron Dundas said even if it were clear, children probably wouldn't comprehend the message anyhow.

"I guess you can find controversy in anything I suppose," he said. "It's a kids' toy — most kids probably don't understand what Islam is anyway."

Mattel has issued a statement acknowledging that there is a sound that resembles "night," "right" or "light."

Listen to the clip of the Mommy Cuddle 'n Coo doll and decide for yourself.

"Because the original sound track is compressed into a file that can be played through an inexpensive toy speaker, actual sounds may be imprecise or distorted," the company said in an October news release.

The company has eliminated that portion of the sound file from future production though dolls with the old sound file are still available in stores.
