Furniture retailer Ikea Canada on Thursday announced a recall of their Iris and Alvine white Roman blinds, following the strangulation of a toddler in the U.S.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which has also issued a recall of the blinds, said a one-year-old was strangled after becoming caught in the inner cord of the Roman blinds. No related incidents have been reported in Canada.
The recall affects about 200,000 blinds with the supplier number 19799 or 21369. The blinds, which were made in India, were sold in Ikea stores across Canada from July 2005 through June 2008.
Consumers should stop using the blinds and contact the store for a full refund.
The U.S. CPSC also issued a separate recall of Green Mountain Vista blinds and shades sold in the U.S. The federal agency reported a two-year-old child became caught in a beaded chain hanging from the blinds. The child was rescued by her older brother.
The recall affects the Insulated Black-Out Roller Shades and Insulated Roman Shades with the RN number 107875 and sold in U.S. stores and catalogues from June 2005 through September 2008. The blinds were made in China.
Consumers should check their window coverings to see if a tension device has been attached. If the device is missing they should contact the manufacturer for a repair kit.
The CPSC also cautioned caregivers to check all Roman blinds and shades, and ensure that pull cords are not exposed.
