The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning people not to consume a Chinese dessert mix made with milk that was tainted with melamine.

The agency advised people Sunday to avoid Nissin Cha Cha Dessert that was made with Yili Pure Milk, which was detected by the Hong Kong government to contain melamine.

Nearly 13,000 children have been sickened and four have died in China after being fed baby formula tainted with melamine, which is used to make plastics. Tests showed that milk powder in China contained the chemical, which has no nutritional value but was added to make the product appear higher in protein levels when tested.

Nissin Cha Cha Dessert is sold in a 440 g package (2 packs of 220 g) bearing UPC 4 897878 550005, the agency said. All Best Before dates are affected by this advisory.

The product was distributed in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia, the agency said. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product, the agency said.

Nissin Foods Company Ltd. is recalling the product in Hong Kong. Regent Long Marketing and Distribution Ltd., the Richmond, B.C.-based importer of the dessert, was notified and is voluntarily recalling the affected product, the agency said.
