After signing free agent Markus Naslund this off-season, the New York Rangers might be prepared to add his friend, former Toronto Maple Leaf Mats Sundin.

The New York Post on Sunday reported that the free-agent centre's agent, J.P. Barry, has been in constant contact with the Rangers this week.

However, the newspaper said contract talks have yet to begin with the 37-year-old Sundin's representative.

Later in the day, Barry told TSN that no such deal was in the offing and reiterated his client had not yet decided if he would play at all.

The Rangers have about $2 million US to spend on the 2008-09 roster, while the Maple Leafs reportedly have offered Sundin a one-year deal worth $7 million.

The Montreal Canadiens and Vancouver Canucks, who recently threw a two-year, $20-million offer in front of Sundin, also have shown interest in the big Swede this summer.

Sources told the Post that Sundin's first choice after the Rangers is Philadelphia, which has been pushing hard to acquire the one-time Toronto captain.

Sundin is coming off a productive 2007-08 campaign in which he scored 32 goals and 78 points in 74 games.

Sundin has played 13 of his last 17 NHL seasons with the Maple Leafs, who picked him up from the Quebec Nordiques in a blockbuster trade on June 28, 1994.

In 1,305 NHL regular-season games, he has 555 goals and 766 assists for 1,321 points.
