Forward Joffrey Lupul reached terms Monday on a four-year, $17-million US extension with the Philadelphia Flyers.

Lupul, 24, will make $2.9 million US this season in the final year of his current contract, then $4.25 million US in each year of the extension.

He is committed to the Flyers through the 2012-13 NHL campaign.

"It is not something that I was really expecting this summer," Lupul said. "The Flyers, kind of, reached out to us after July 1.

"It was a great surprise and I am really thrilled. I have one year left on my contract … so five more years with Philadelphia is great."

Lupul posted 20 goals and 26 assists for 46 points in 56 games last season, missing 26 games because of a concussion and a sprained ankle.

He has totalled 77 goals and 161 points in 293 games over four NHL seasons with the Anaheim Ducks, Edmonton Oilers and Flyers.

"The way that the salary cap is structured, we felt it was an opportunity to lock up another one of our young players," Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. "He is one of our young, core players that we are really high on and we look for good things to come from Joffrey."

Lupul, from Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., was acquired by Philadelphia, along with defenceman Jason Smith, from Edmonton for defenceman Joni Pitkanen and forward Geoff Sanderson on June 1, 2007.
