(Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)The talent rich got richer on Wednesday as the Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings landed highly coveted unrestricted free agent Marian Hossa.
Hossa, 29, received a one-year deal worth $7.45 million US. He earned $7 million the past season.
Hossa scored 29 goals and added 37 assists in 72 games with Atlanta and Pittsburgh. He finished third among all NHL players in the playoffs in both goals (12) and points (26) as the Penguins bowed out in six games in the Stanley Cup final.
For his career, Hossa has 299 goals and 349 assists in 701 regular-season games with Ottawa, Atlanta and Pittsburgh.
The right-winger has twice reached the 40-goal mark and hit 100 points in 2006-07 while with the Thrashers. He came over to Atlanta from Ottawa in a 2005 trade that saw Dany Heatley go to the Senators.
The native of Stara Lubovna has represented his native Slovakia at the 2002 and 2006 Olympics.
Talks between Hossa and the Penguins broke down last week and the player had reportedly drawn serious interest from the Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens and the New York Rangers, among other teams.
