Brad Stuart has found stability with the Stanley Cup champions.

The defenceman signed a four-year, $15-million US deal with the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday and avoided entering the NHL's free agent derby, which began at noon ET.

The deal also includes a no-trade clause for the first two years and has a limited no-trade clause after that.

The Rocky Mountain House, Alta., native prospered in his role as Detroit's No. 4 defenceman after he was traded at the season's deadline from the Los Angeles Kings. He recorded a goal and six assists, and a plus-15 rating in 21 playoff games with the Stanley Cup champion Red Wings.

In 579 career games with the San Jose Sharks, Boston Bruins, Calgary Flames, Los Angeles and Detroit, he has totalled 59 goals and 170 assists (229 points).

Stuart, 28, was drafted third overall by the Sharks in the 1998 NHL entry draft.

The club also shored up their goaltending after the retirement of Dominik Hasek by acquiring veteran Ty Conklin.

The 32-year-old resurrected his career the past season when Marc-Andre Fleury suffered an ankle injury that put him out for several weeks. Conklin went 18-8-5 for Pittsburgh with a 2.52 goals-against average and two shutouts.

The Anchorage, Alask., native has a 2.60 average in 109 career NHL games, with stops also in Edmonton, Columbus and Buffalo.

The Wings did not immediately release financial details. Conklin earned $500,000 US last season.
