Ohio-based Evenflo Co. announced a voluntary recall Friday of its Discovery infant car seats after tests showed the seat could separate from its base in a high-impact side collision.

The recall affects about one million car seats with the model numbers 390, 391, 534 and 552. The car seats were not sold in Canada but may have been brought into the country by cross-border shoppers or through online retailers.

Caregivers with the recalled car seat should contact the company for a dual-hook fastener to fix the safety hazard.

"While our current Discovery car seat models have performed well to protect infants in actual side impact automobile collisions without any reports of serious injury or death since they were introduced, we want to take further steps to protect the safety of children who use our products," said Rob Matteucci, the company's CEO, in a release.

The company says consumers can continue to use their car seats until the fastener is mailed out.
