Health Canada has issued a safety alert warning consumers that Yeniujyn, a natural health product sold as a treatment for "involuntary passage of urine diseases," contains high levels of lead and arsenic.

The federal agency on Wednesday warned exposure to heavy metals may cause symptoms including abdominal pain, vomiting, muscle cramps, diarrhea, heart abnormalities and nervous system problems.

Health Canada has learned of one associated adverse reaction linked to Yeniujyn.

The product, manufactured by Kwangchow United Manufactory of Chinese Medicine and distributed by Wing Quon Enterprises Ltd., has not been authorized for sale in Canada but may have been sold in stores and through online retailers. Wing Quon Enterprises is voluntarily recalling the product from the marketplace.

Consumers should return the product to the retailer and consult their doctor about any health concerns.
