Frank Yallop has quit the Los Angeles Galaxy after coaching David Beckham this season to return to San Jose for a second stint in charge of the Earthquakes.

The Galaxy will receive San Jose's third-round pick in the MLS SuperDraft as compensation.

Beckham broke the news of Yallop's departure Sunday night, saying the former Canadian international had informed the team after the Galaxy's charity game to benefit victims of Southern California's recent wildfires.

The Galaxy confirmed Yallop's resignation Monday.

"Frank steered our team through a unique and challenging period in our history," Galaxy general manager Alexi Lalas said in a statement.

"He is a friend and a gentleman. I want to personally thank him for his contributions."

Yallop won two MLS championships as coach of San Jose in 2001 and 2003, but he struggled to duplicate that success with the Galaxy.

Yallop coached one full season after taking over for Steve Sampson in the middle of the 2006 MLS season.

the Galaxy didn't make the playoffs in either season and had an 18-20-12 record under Yallop.   

"We felt that he was the right man," Beckham said. "We felt that he's a good manager and a strong character with the team.

"But we've all said, he's not walking away. He's looking after himself and he's looking after his family — it's what we would all do."

In San Jose, Yallop was honoured as 2001 MLS coach of the year and compiled a 41-25-18 record under him from 2001-03.

After leaving San Jose, Yallop spent two years as coach of the Canadian national team.

As a player, he had stints with the English First Division, Canada's national team and the Mutiny MLS franchise over nearly 20 years.

Yallop returns to a San Jose franchise that was dissolved after the 2005 season.

Its players transferred to Houston to become the Dynamo.

New Earthquakes owner Lew Wolff was granted the rights to revive
the team this year.

John Doyle, a former assistant under Yallop, is San Jose's general manager.

Assistant Trevor James will serve as interim coach when the Galaxy plays friendlies in Vancouver on Wednesday and Minneapolis on Sunday.
