A Toronto man has been charged with fraud after advertising an apartment for rent on Craigslist.org, an online network where people can buy and sell various products.
Police say the suspect rented an apartment, paying first and last month's rent. He then advertised the same unit on the Craigslist site, posing as the landlord.
Police say the man allegedly rented it to three different tenants, collecting first month's rent from each plus security deposits, and then skipped off with the money.
Police believe there are other victims.
Kevin Froude, 35, of Toronto is facing four counts of fraud and two counts of possession of property obtained by crime.
This is the second recent scam involving Craigslist in Toronto.
Police are investigating another case involving a young woman defrauded of more than $2,000 by someone posing as a real estate agent.
Earlier this week, the New York Times reported on a prostitution sting that nabbed eight women. All are accused of using Craigslist to trade sex for money.
