Canada's food watchdog is warning consumers to avoid Robert's American Gourmet Veggie Booty snack food because it may be tainted with salmonella bacteria.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said Thursday the snack food is being withdrawn from the marketplace.

The product is confirmed to have been distributed in B.C., Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan but may also have been sold nationally. Consumers may also have bought it from online retailers, phone orders and mail orders.

Food tainted with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled, but the bacteria can cause symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

No associated illnesses have been reported in Canada but there have been several incidents reported in the U.S.

The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
