Visitors will soon be able to view the inspection records of all tourist accommodations on Prince Edward Island.
'This will be another way to ensure our visitors that they're receiving the best quality services.'— Tourism Minister Philip Brown
Tourism Minister Philip Brown believes P.E.I. is the first province to make the inspections public, and that could be a selling point.
"We're the only province in Canada that has an annual inspection of all accommodations, as well as a star-grading system," said Brown.
"This will be another way to ensure our visitors that they're receiving the best quality services."
The Tourism Department will release the inspection records of all 1,200 accommodations in the province, including hotels, cottages and campgrounds. The reports include a broad range of information, from whether a place needs a paint job or new curtains to whether it's got bedbugs.
The release is a result of another access request from CBC Radio. The Department of Tourism had not planned to release the information, but after CBC Radio won a similar Freedom of Information case that forced government to make restaurant inspections public, the department conceded.
The province will be sending letters to every tourist operator on the Island letting them know their inspection records will soon be public.
