Canadians are being warned not to eat a certain brand of tahini because it may be contaminated with salmonella, said the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

The affected product is MaraNatha brand Organic Raw Sesame Tahini, No Salt.

It is made in the United States and sold in 340-gram jars with the following UPC code: 0 51651 09327 9. The expiry date on the product is July 27, 2007.

The tahini is sold across the country and is being voluntarily pulled from store shelves.

There have been no illnesses reported from eating the sesame paste.

Foods tainted with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled, but the bacteria can cause symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

People with weak immune systems are particularly vulnerable to salmonella poisoning.
