Jim Rutherford will continue to run the show in Carolina, despite the Hurricanes' disappointing 2006-07 season that followed their first Stanley Cup championship.
On Monday, the veteran NHL general manager agreed to a five-year contract extension.
"Jim has been the face of the Hurricanes since the team's arrival in North Carolina," Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos said. "The franchise has seen continued growth and success under his leadership, and he has been regularly recognized as one of the best in the business."
Carolina posted a 40-34-8 record this season, finishing 11th in the 15-team Eastern Conference and out of the playoffs for the third time in the last four years.
Rutherford has been with the franchise since its days in Hartford and helped with the move to Carolina before the 1997-98 season. Only New Jersey Devils GM Lou Lamoriello has been on the job with one team longer.
The Hurricanes have twice made trips to the Stanley Cup final, prevailing last spring over the Edmonton Oilers.
Rutherford, 58, has been named executive of the year by The Hockey News twice and was voted by his colleagues as the top general manager in 2006.
The former NHL goaltender played 457 games over 13 seasons with Detroit, Pittsburgh, Toronto and Los Angeles.
