A New Democrat MLA wants to give Nova Scotians the right to install clotheslines, even in subdivisions where they are now banned.

Howard Epstein's proposed law would nullify any agreement with a developer that prevents a homeowner from erecting a line.

It doesn't make environmental sense to force people to use dryers, the MLA for Halifax Chebucto said.

"I think it would make a small difference," said Epstein, adding he uses his clothesline regularly. "That's what you do, you move ahead with as many small items as you possibly can. Many a mickle makes a muckle, I think is how it goes."

Energy Minister Bill Dooks agrees that a clothesline is an energy saver and promises to consider Epstein's proposal.

"There was a day when people did not view clotheslines as being very attractive," Dooks said. "Today it sends a message to say the person using a clothesline is energy conscious."

Epstein's private member's bill includes other measures aimed at improving the environment, such as preventing construction if it blocks solar panels and stopping service-station owners from charging motorists for the air they use to fill their tires.

Dooks said he would consider those proposals too.
