The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning people not to consume certain kinds of Siena brand salami because the meat may be contaminated with salmonella.

Manufacturer Siena Foods Ltd. in Toronto, is voluntarily recalling the products and said the alert concerns the following three brands:

• Whole or half Genoa Salami, mild, with code dates 07JL25, 07JL27, 07JL29 and 07JL31.
• Sliced Genoa Salami, mild, approximately 180 to 200 g, with codes dates 07JL28, 07JL29, 07JL30, 07JL31, 07AUG01, 07AU06, 07AU07 and 07AU08, bearing lot code 28779.
• Whole or half Calabrese Salami, mild with code dates 07JL21.

The affected products were distributed nationally.

If consumers bought sliced salami at deli counters but are not sure of the brand, they should ask the place of purchase to make sure they have not used the affected product.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of the salami.

Food contaminated with salmonella bacteria may not look or smell spoiled, but consumption could cause short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

In young children and the elderly with weakened immune systems, the food-borne illness can sometimes lead to deadly infections. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.
