A high-tech "magic mirror," touted as the ultimate form of social shopping, was unveiled at the U.S. National Retail Federation's annual trade show in New York City this week.

The futuristic, high-tech mirror, designed by digital design company IconNicholson, will allow consumers seeking opinions and input to send a live feed to their friends via infrared technology.

Joseph Olewitz, senior vice-president of client relations at IconNicholson, said the project aims to target shoppers aged 17 to 24.

"[Young shoppers] are IMing and phone messaging each other all the time," Olewitz said. "They shop in groups. This will appeal to them."

Friends can send back feedback via e-mail or instant message while the mirror keeps a running thumbs-up, thumbs-down tally.

The mirrors also allow shoppers to use touchscreen panels to select matching shoes and accessories. Consumers can also select other outfits from a database to be projected on the mirror in front of them, allowing them to try on the outfit without actually putting on the clothes.

The company said it plans to roll out the first high-tech dressing room at an upscale boutique within the next six months and said some larger retailers have expressed interest in the units.
