Blackhawks ink head coach Denis Savard to extension

The Chicago Blackhawks decided Tuesday to reward rookie head coach Denis Savard with a one-year contract extension.
Financial details were not disclosed.

Savard, 44, is signed through next season.
He is unbeaten in three games since replacing Trent Yawney, who was fired Nov. 27.
Sid Abel is the only other Blackhawks head coach to win his first three games, accomplishing the feat in 1952.
Savard, a former star with the Blackhawks, rejoined Chicago as an assistant coach under Craig Hartsburg on Dec. 3, 1997.
Drafted third overall by Chicago in 1980, the Pointe-Gatineau, Que., native posted 473 goals and 865 assists for 1,338 points in 1,196 games over 17 NHL seasons.
Savard also played for the Montreal Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning.
