Consumers should avoid certain brands of carrot juice because of a possible botulism risk, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency says.

Wm. Bolthouse Farms is recalling the following three brands of carrot juice: Earthbound Farm Organic Carrot Juice, Bolthouse 100% Carrot Juice, and President's Choice Organics 100% Pure Carrot Juice.

The recalled bottles, sold in one litre and 450-millilitre sizes, have an expiry date of Nov. 11, 2006, or earlier. The carrot juice may have been distributed across Canada.

Four cases of botulism poisoning have been reported in the United States. The tainted juice was found to contain the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. Symptoms of the life-threatening illness include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, headache, double vision, throat dryness, and nose and respiratory failure.

Food contaminated with Clostridium botulinum toxin may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with the toxin may cause nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, headache, double vision, dry throat, respiratory failure and paralysis. In severe cases of illness, people may die.
