Ortiz breaks Red Sox home run record

Last Updated: Friday, September 22, 2006 | 12:17 AM ET

Boston designated hitter David Ortiz hit his 51st and 52nd home runs of the season Thursday night to break the Red Sox single-season record of 50 set in 1938 by Jimmie Foxx.

Ortiz hit a solo homer off Minnesota pitcher Johan Santana with two outs in the bottom of the first inning and added another solo blast in the seventh of Boston's 6-0 win over the Twins at Fenway Park.

"Great feeling, especially doing it here at home in front of my fans," Ortiz said.

Ortiz also set the major league record by a designated hitter.

His seventh-inning blast was his 45th of the season, two more than he hit when he set the record in 2005.

Ortiz leads the American League in homers and RBIs (132) this season.

The last player to lead the AL in homers and RBI in the same season was Texas' Alex Rodriguez in 2002. The last Red Sox player to do so was Tony Armas in 1984.
