Wendy's Restaurants of Canada is voluntarily recalling packets of potentially contaminated croutons, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency says.
The product, called Wendy's Homestyle Garlic Croutons, is only available at Wendy's Restaurants in Ontario and Quebec. They're given to customers in 14-gram packages of clear cellophane, and are only made available to those who request them at the counter.
The CFIA is warning the public not to consume the croutons, which may cause salmonellosis, potentially deadly to children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems.
In otherwise healthy people, salmonellosis may cause fever, severe headaches, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea in the short term and severe arthritis in the long term.
The packages of croutons affected bear the "UPC 0-70200-100282" and are coded "USE BY FEB 05 07." Any customers who have taken packages home and not yet used them are urged to discard the croutons.
A Wendy's Canada spokesperson said Friday that as a safety precaution, the company will not distribute any croutons in its restaurants for approximately one week.
There have been no reported illnesses associated with consumption of this product.
