Canon Inc. said Tuesday it plans to inspect over 1.87 million personal copiers that pose a risk of overheating and catching fire.
The Tokyo-based company identified 11 models manufactured between 1987 and 1997 as being at risk for fires. The copiers were sold mainly in Japan, North America and Europe.
Canon officials said a problem with the copiers' wiring could cause the machines to overheat, smoke or catch fire. The company is expected to spend $1.7 million US to have technicians inspect the copiers and replace parts.
The company has received three reports of copiers overheating since 1992, the latest incident coming in July of this year. No injuries have been reported, said Canon spokesman Mayuko Yaguchi.
