Indianapolis Colts running back James Mungro will miss the entire NFL season after being placed on the injured reserve list Wednesday with a torn knee ligament.

Mungro tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee Sunday during a pre-season game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Mungro, a short-yardage specialist, scored 13 touchdowns during his four-year career with the Colts.

"Don't know when they're going to do the surgery but at some point that's just going to be necessary," Colts head coach Tony Dungy said.

Mungro also played on special teams and his versatility won't be easily replaced.

"He was our third back and was a very good runner, a guy that could go in and play tailback and win games for us," Dungy said.

"He was a very good special teams player for us. So somebody's going to have to step into that role."

The Colts also placed defensive end Jonathan Goddard on injured reserve with a broken foot that he suffered against the Seahawks and released rookie quarterback Mike McGann.
