Anne Carson has become the first winner of the Griffin Poetry Prize. The award has been given to Carson for her poetry collection Men in the Off Hours.
Carson takes home a cheque for $40,000. The Griffin Poetry Prize is the richest literary award in the country.
The international prize goes to Paul Celan's Glottal Stop, translated by Heather McHugh and Nikolai Popov.
The awards are a gift from Toronto industrialist Scott Griffin. The prizes were handed out Thursday night in Toronto.
