Cliff Tang had pleaded guilty to criminal negligence causing death, and failure to remain at the scene of an accident.
He was driving a Porsche Boxster at nearly 200 kilometres an hour when he hit 35-year-old Jerry Kithithee, who was crossing Knight Street.
Tang has also been banned from driving for 10 years.
The Crown had asked for a five-year prison term.
During his submission, prosecutor Dan Mulligan told the court that Tang has a long record of bad driving and a criminal conviction for possessing counterfeit money.
Mulligan also pointed out that Tang has not paid any of a $10,000 fine for that conviction, and has only completed five of 100 hours of community service.
Tang's lawyer, Peter Leask, had asked for a conditional sentence, that would have kept his client out of jail.
Leask says he may appeal the sentence.
