The Edmonton Oilers hockey team announced plans for the upgrades on the weekend. But City Councillor Jim Taylor says the city has not been approached to kick in any money for the project. He says he first heard of the proposals in news reports.
"We've seen that before where things get raised in public before they get raised at council to put council on the defensive or you know back us into a corner or something like that," he says. "I really hope that that's not what this is about. I hope that this is just some badly worded misinformation and an explanation will come forward telling us that there's nothing to it."
Skyreach Centre is owned by the City of Edmonton and managed by Northlands. The Oilers are the primary tenant.
The proposed upgrading includes the construction of 11 new luxury suites, a new score clock, replacing 7,700 seats and upgrading the television lighting.
