Premier Lorne Calvert says he would consider a radical change to the way the provincial government is elected.
Speaking at the annual meeting of rural municipalities on Wednesday, Calvert was asked if he would consider proportional representation for Saskatchewan elections.
"It is a proposal that we, as a province, should think about and discuss," Calvert replied.
"I'm not opposed to this notion."
He added, "I'm more interested in discussing proportional representation than I am in running elections for senators that will never be appointed."
After the last provincial election, the idea of proportional representation has gained a lot of support in rural areas. For the first time in Saskatchewan history, the rural population is not large enough to elect or defeat a government without the support of urban voters.
