The child apparently woke up in the middle of the night and wandered outside.
However, Dr. Allan De Caen says surviving is one thing -- coming out of the ordeal undamaged is another. De Caen says when the child was found her heart had already stopped and that means her brain was deprived of oxygen.
"The next hurdle is what is the extent of swelling, of brain swelling that she's going to have. You know, when it comes to likelihood of surviving I think the odds are in her favour right now, that she's going to survive," said De Caen.
The girl is semi-conscious but she's being kept sedated to minimize the stress. De Caen says the toddler also suffered severe frostbite on her legs.
A spokesperson for Alberta Children Services says the department has seen no evidence of any neglect or wrong-doing in the case.
