Gun and cash found on road rage suspect

Last Updated: Friday, February 2, 2001 | 4:32 PM ET

Vancouver Police got more than they bargained for when they pulled a driver over for not wearing a seat belt last week. They found a loaded handgun hidden under an arm rest, plus $30,000-$40,000 in cash.

The driver, 25-year-old Darren Liao, was also wanted in an earlier road rage case. He was arrested.

On Friday, the Crown made it's case for keeping Liao in custody until his trial. Prosecutor Nicola Mahaffy says Liao was driving along Main Street when a car ahead of him stopped to allow a bus to pull in.

Mahaffy says Liao pulled ahead of the other man's car, and stopped. Then, she says, several passengers in Liau's car hopped onto the hood, and cracked the man's windshield.

The man reported that Liao then opened his car door and punched him in the face. The group got back in the car and drove away.

Despite the Crown's arguments, a B.C. Supreme Court judge released him on bail. Liao is to appear in provincial court on charges of assault, and possession of a firearm on February 14.
