With the death toll mounting in last week's earthquake in India, temples in B.C. are busy raising money to help the survivors.

The devastating earthquake, which measured 7.9 on the Richter scale, struck Gujarat state in India and is now believed to have killed at least 20,000 people.

The Guru Nanak Sikh Temple in Surrey collected $8,000 on Sunday, while a Hindu temple in Burnaby raised more than $10,000. Many people who worship at Vishva Hindu Parishad are from Gujarat State, where the quake hit hardest.

Temple president Krishan Soni says there still hasn't been a decision on where the money will be sent. "The Red Cross is a possibility," he says. "There's also a possibility of sending money through the Consular General of India."

Soni says the main thing was to start collecting the money which will be needed for medical supplies and construction work. Soni says the fundraising will continue for several more weeks, at least.
