The Honorable Melvin James McQuaid, a former leader of P.E.I.'s Conservative party and Cardigan MP has died. McQuaid, 89, began his career as a lawyer and clerk of the town of Souris from 1939 to 1958.
He was first elected to the P.E.I. legislature in 1959, and was appointed minister of finance and attorney general in the Walter Shaw government.
In 1965, McQuaid was elected federally in the district of Kings. His second term as MP began in 1968 when he was elected in Cardigan.
Four years later, McQuaid was elected leader of the Island PC's and, after winning a byelection in 1972, he returned to provincial politics until 1976 when he resigned his seat and was sworn in as a Supreme Court Judge.
McQuaid stayed active on the bench until 1981, when he retired and was appointed to the national parole board.
