With solid scientific evidence seeming to have failed, the Canadian government is going to try another approach to try to resolve the potato wart dispute with the U.S.

The federal ministers of both Trade and Agriculture have requested consultations under the North American Free Trade Agreement.

The U.S. closed its border to P.E.I. potatoes more than two months ago after the detection of the potato wart fungus on the Island.

Island MP Wayne Easter says these consultations will involve high level officials from both Canada and the U.S. However, he cautions it's no quick fix, the process could take many months.

Easter says entering into NAFTA consultations does not prevent Canada from retaliating - trade-wise - against the United States.

So far, the Canadian government has continued to back away from any trade retaliation.
