George Puil has survived a challenge to his position as chair of the Greater Vancouver Regional District Board of Directors. Puil has been elected by the board to serve as chair for the fifth straight year.

Coquitlam Mayor John Kingsbury had challenged Puil's leadership.

He said the rift that has developed within the regional district showed that the board needed a fresh approach.

Vancouver councillor Gordon Price is a Puil supporter. "He's demonstrated by his own actions that when he's sitting as a regional chair, his commitment is to the region."

The GVRD has been split on the issue of the controversial TransLink vehicle levy. Several surburban members of the regional district have been threatening to leave, complaining their residents would be paying the tax, but would receive very little benefit.
