Bev Rowbotham, 42, went missing from her River Road home Tuesday evening.
She told her husband and two young sons she was going shopping at a Safeway store in Selkirk.
When she didn't return by 1:30 in the morning, her husband phoned police. They found her body in her car in a Selkirk parking lot early Wednesday morning.
Police don't know precisely how she died, but they're treating her death as suspicious.
Her family, devastated by the news, spoke briefly with reporters.
"She was a really good mother," said her sister, Betty Bachewhich.
"We're in utter shock," said Ed Bachewhich, Rowbotham's brother-in-law.
Investigators moved the car and the body to a nearby garage to comb for evidence. They also called out a team of investigators to search the neighbourhood for clues and witnesses.
Police hope to have more information once an autopsy is completed Thursday.
