A rescue plan is underway to save Fredericton's old railway station. The dilapidated buildings may have a future as an Irving office complex.

A community group has been pleading to save the old station. It wants to connect it to the citywide walking trail which follows the old rail line.

Mark D'Arcy is the leader of the group --- one of three with active plans for this property. He's enthusiastic. "The station would be the crown jewel."

J.D. Irving Limited has submitted documents to City Hall supporting an an application for an office complex.

It's on a big tract of land the company got when it bought the railway line from Canadian Pacific.

A drawing of the new office building shows the old railway station rebuilt alongside -- the centrepiece of the development.

The proposal from Irving shows in small print, a CIBC call centre located there.

There are several competing proposals to put the banking centre elsewhere

Irving officials were not available for comment about whether their railway development would go ahead without that big potential tenant.
