Dr. Murray McQuigge, Medical Officer of Health in Walkerton, Tuesday questioned the safety of every deep-water well in Ontario.

He linked cow manure and heavy rainfall to water contamination.

But, Environment Minister Dan Newman did not endorse the report or issue an alert to users of deep-drilled wells. He did, however, announce increased penalties for polluters of the environment.

Newman said the government's report on the Walkerton crisis will be ready at the end of this month. He said the government has tested two-thirds of the province's 630 deep-water wells.

Opposition critics accused the Minister of dragging his feet.

"Haven't they learned anything from Walkerton when we hear that deep water wells after rainfall can make people sick and maybe even kill them, then that's urgent," Marilyn Churley, the NDP Environment Critic, said.
