Retired Lieutenant-General Romeo Dallaire was found semi-conscious on a park bench in Hull on Tuesday.
The Quebec City native who headed the United Nations mission to Rwanda in 1994, was taken to hospital apparently in a heavily intoxicated state.
Dallaire has said in recent interviews how distressed his experience in Rwanda has left him. He retired from the armed forces in April. He was released from hospital on Tuesday night.
