Seventeen-year-old Kelly Ellard has been sentenced to five years in jail before becoming eligible for parole for killing Reena Virk near Victoria in 1997. That's the minimum sentence.
A jury convicted Ellard last month of second-degree murder, and handed her an automatic life term. But it was up to B.C. Supreme Court Justice Nancy Morrison to decide how much time she had to serve before becoming eligible for parole.
Virk's grandfather is upset that Ellard didn't get the maximum term of seven years. Mukan Pallan says he's seen no signs of remorse in Ellard.Ellard is currently being held at a youth jail in Burnaby. There's no word on whether she will be transferred to an adult jail.
Ellard and a group of other teens swarmed the 14-year-old Virk at a bridge on Victoria's Gorge waterway in 1997.
