A cry for women's equality sounded through the streets of downtown Charlottetown Wednesday as nearly 100 people marked International Women's Day with a march.

"Women still are not making as much as men, they're not advancing into positions of management and power," said Heidi Rankin of the P.E.I. Advisory Council on the Status of Women.

One woman who has advanced is Pat Mella. She is the Provincial Treasurer in the P.E.I. cabinet, and the Minister Responsible for the Status of Women.

She said in a speech that women have paid a price for the progress they've made.

"While women's labour force participation is clearly a sign of freedom, women's loss of free time is rarely noted," she said, quoting from a report. "Workplace structures and time schedules still reflect an outdated reality of one breadwinner and one home maker, and the gender division of labour within the household has barely changed."

Others involved in the event said poverty and domestic violence are issues that Prince Edward Island women are still struggling with.
