An update now on those dolphins trapped in ice against the shore near St. Andrews on the Southwest Coast. The ice has now moved off. But it was probably too late.

On Tuesday evening, there was pack ice. On Wednesday, there's nothing to see but open water, and the damage the pack ice left behind. The wind has moved the ice along the shore, taking with it the evidence of its destructive power. Late Tuesday, just a few dolphins remained alive from a school that may have numbered up to 70. Pack ice driven by northwest winds had trapped them in the shallow water along the shore.

When fisheries officers first arrived they could hear the dolphins crying. Now - only silence. Fisheries Officer Linda Davis-Kettle: "We called the marine mammal assistance program and because of the nature and shallowness of the water, they couldn't send anybody or do anything in breaking the ice up to create a path out." They say it's doubtful the ice cleared in time to save any of the dolphins.
