The lawyer for a convicted sex offender says his client doesn't pose a threat to the public.

Jeffrey Ray represents convicted sex offender Dawson Davidson.

Davidson has been released on bail pending a dangerous offenders hearing.

Ray declined to be interviewed, but released a written statement on behalf of his client, Dawson Davidson.

He states Davidson is not a serial rapist, but acknowledges he has been convicted of four counts of sexual assault and one count of aggravated assault.

He notes Davidson served more than three years in jail after the latest conviction.

The lawyer blames provincial Crown attorneys for delaying a dangerous offenders hearing originally scheduled for September 20th.

Ray states: "The application for bail succeeded because of the consideration of the length of time served, the extensive arrangements for therapy and most importantly, because the court believed that there were sufficient safeguards in place to remove any risk of Davidson reoffending."

Ray was responding to an outcry in the wake of Davidson's release. The decision is now being appealed.

Police and crown counsel went public with concerns about Davidson earlier this week.

They said they believed it was the first time anyone scheduled for a dangerous offender hearing had been granted bail.

Police spokesperson Anne Drennan issued a public warning, saying the department was worried about the risk Davidson poses to the public.
