Astronaut John Glenn and the city of Perth, Australia have repeated a bit of history. As Glenn flew across the city, the residents turned on all the lights, just like they did 36 years ago during his first space mission.
It was a gesture that wasn't lost on the crew of the space shuttle.
Crowds in Perth broke into cheers when Glenn's voice was broadcast live from the space shuttle Discovery.
Glenn said, "I think it looks even better now than then. Pass along our very best to all the folks."
The mission is scheduled to last nine days. Glenn will be performing Canadian designed experiments on aging while in space.
