Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Wednesday that United Nations arms inspectors, led by American Scott Ritter, saw the inside of Iraq's defense ministry for the first time.

Before seeing President Clinton at the White House, Annan told reporters that Baghdad has lived up to its end of a Feb. 23 agreement to end a stand-off over inspection of weapons sites.

A new United Nations arms commissioner arrived in Baghdad on Wednesday to make sure Iraq honours its pledge to let UN weapons inspectors do their job.

In the Persian Gulf, Canadian sailors on board HMCS Toronto are doing their part as well.

The Canadian frigate is in the Persian Gulf to ensure that no one is violating agreement made between Iraq and the UN. Allied ships control what gets in, but Iraq has a found a way to get exports through the blockade by going through Iranian waters.

The Canadians' job is to check merchants to see if they are trying to ship goods past the blockade.
