The Liberals made headway in the Gaspé Peninsula Monday night, taking three of the six ridings in a region that traditionally belonged to the Parti Québécois.
The PQ held on to the other three seats.
Municipal Affairs Minister Nathalie Normandeau, who serves as deputy premier, handily won the riding of Bonaventure, while Liberals Georges Mamelonet and Germain Chevarie took Gaspé and Îles-de-la-Madeleine from the PQ.
The PQ held on to its seats in Matane, Matapédia and Rimouski.
The area has been a PQ stronghold in past elections. The sovereigntist party held five of the ridings going into Monday's provincial election, while the Liberals had one.
