Riding profile: Located on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, Rimouski riding includes the following municipalities: Biencourt, Esprit-Saint, Lac-des-Aigles, La Trinité-des-Monts, Le Bic, Rimouski, Saint-Anaclet-de-Lessard, Saint-Eugène-de-Ladrière, Saint-Fabien, Saint-Marcellin, Saint-Narcisse-de-Rimouski and Saint-Valérien.

Riding history: The Rimouski electoral district was created in 1829. In the 1992 redistribution, 4,479 electors moved to Matapedia riding. This included the polls of: Luceville; Sainte-Luce; Pointe-au-Pere.

In 2001 redistribution Saint-Guy, Saint-Mathieu-de-Rioux, Saint-Médard and Saint-Simon moved to Rivière-du-Loup (1,136 electors). Pointe-au-Père moved back to Rimouski from Matapédia (3,050).

Political history: 1956-1973 inclusive - LIB 1976, 1981 - PQ 1985, 1989 - LIB 1994, 1998, 2003 - PQ

1995 sovereignty referendum: Yes - 63.73 per cent; No - 36.27 per cent

1970

Liberal Maurice Tessier won in 1966 and 1970. Appointed minister of municipal affairs, 1970; minister of public works, May to October 1970; February to April 1973; minister of public works and supply, April to September 1973.

1973

Liberal Claude St-Hilaire defeated Parti Québécois's René Daigneault by 4,518 votes.

1976

Parti Québécois's Alain Marcoux defeated Liberal St-Hilaire by 5,146 votes.

1981

Parti Québécois's Marcoux defeated Liberal Georges Fafard by 8,963 votes. Appointed minister of public works and supply, 1981; minister of revenue and minister of public works and supply, September 1982; minister of municipal affairs responsible for planning and chair of planning committee, March 1984 to December 1985.

1985

Liberal Michel Tremblay defeated Parti Québécois's Marcoux by 284 votes.

1989

Liberal Tremblay defeated Parti Québécois's Jean-Yves Roy by 3,578 votes.

1994

Parti Québécois's Solange Charest defeated Liberal Tremblay by 2,627 votes.

1998

Parti Québécois's Charest defeated Liberal Chantal Landry by 7,070 votes.

2003

Parti Québécois's Charest defeated Liberal Èric Forest by 3,360 votes.

2007

Parti Québécois's Irvin Pelletier defeated Action Démocratique du Québec's Roger Picard.
