Riding Profile: Verchères is located on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, just north of Montreal Island. The riding contains the following municipalities: Calixa-Lavallèe, Contrecoeur, La Prèsentation, St-Amable, St-Antoine-sur-Richelieu, St-Charles-sur-Richelieu, St-Denis-sur-Richelieu, Ste-Madeleine, St-Marc-sur-Richelieu, Ste-Marie-Madeleine, St-Roch-de-Richelieu, Varennes and Verchères.

Riding history: Riding first existed in the 1830 election.

In the 1992 redistribution, Verchères kept 17,523 of its electors. The majority of electors moved to the new riding of Borduas and 12,676 electors were gained from Betrand.

Political history: 1960-1973 inclusive - LIB. Since 1976 - PQ

1995 sovereignty referendum: Yes - 66.87 per cent; No - 33.13 per cent

1973	Liberal Marcel Ostiguy (elected in Rouville in 1970) won here.
1976	Parti Québécois's Jean-Pierre Charbonneau defeated Ostiguy by 4,990 votes.
1985	Charbonneau was re-elected in 1981 and 1985. Resigned as MNA June 30, 1989.
1989	Parti Québécois's Luce Dupuis defeated Liberal Jean-Pierre Beauchesne by 699 votes.
1994	Parti Québécois's Bernard Landry defeated Liberal Sylvain Garneau by 8,131 votes. Served as deputy premier Sept. 26, 1994 to March 8, 2001; minister of international affairs, minister of immigration and cultural communities and minister responsible for French-speaking communities, Sept. 26, 1994 to Nov. 2, 1995; minister of state for the economy and finance, Jan. 29, 1996 to March 8, 2001; minister of industry, trade and technology, Jan. 29, 1996 to Sept. 23, 1998. On Nov. 3, 1995, Landry said he had asked to be removed from responsibilities for cultural communities because although he had tried to do his best, he said, "I have failed."
1998	Landry defeated Liberal Patrick Doyon by 11,768 votes. Sworn in as premier, March 8, 2001.
2003	Landry defeated Liberal Mario Lebrun by 8,248 votes. Landry resigned his seat on June 6, 2005.
Dec. 12, 2005 byelection	Parti Québécois's Stéphane Bergeron defeated Liberal Jean Robert by 9,774 votes.
2007	Bergeron defeated Action Démocratique du Québec's Luc Robitaille.
