Riding profile: Richelieu riding is located northeast of Montreal and contains the following municipalities: Massueville, Saint-Aimé, Sainte-Anne-de-Sorel, Saint-Bernard-de-Michaudville, Saint-Joseph-de-Sorel, Saint-Jude, Saint-Louis, Saint-Ours, Saint-Robert, Sainte-Victoire-de-Sorel, Sorel-Tracy and Yamaska.

Riding history: The riding began with the 1867 election. From 1939 to 1942 it was called Richelieu-Verchères, then re-established as Richelieu for the 1944 election. There was only a minor change in the 2001 redistribution. A small area with no electors was gained from Nicolet-Yamaska.

1970, 1973

Liberal Claude Simard won in 1970 and 1973. Minister of state for industry and commerce, 1970-72; minister of state for tourism, fish and game, February-October 1972; minister of tourism, fish and game, October 1972-1976.

1976, 1981

Parti Québécois's Maurice Martel won in 1976 and 1981. Appointed minister of revenue in December 1984.

1985

Liberal Albert Khelfa defeated Parti Québécois's Martel by 3,047 votes.

1989

Khelfa defeated Parti Québécois's Guy Savard by 3,288 votes.

1994

Parti Québécois's Sylvain Simard defeated Liberal incumbent Khelfa by 4,745 votes. Minister of international relations, minister responsible for relations with French-speaking communities and minister responsible for Outaouais region, Jan. 29, 1996 to Dec. 15, 1998; minister responsible for humanitarian action, Jan. 22, 1997 to Dec. 15, 1998.

1998

Simard defeated Liberal Gilles Ferlatte by 9,027 votes. Minister of citizenship and immigration, Oct. 6, 2000 to March 8, 2001; minister of state for administration and the public service; chair of the Treasury Board, March 8, 2001 to Jan. 30, 2002. Appointed minister responsible for Outaouais region, March 8, 2001. Appointed minister of state for education and employment, minister of education, minister responsible for employment, Jan. 30, 2002.

2003

Simard defeated Liberal Benoît Lefebvre by 2,359 votes.

2007

Simard defeated Action Démocratique du Québec's Philippe Rochat.
