Riding profile: Mégantic-Compton is an Eastern Townships riding that runs along the borders of Vermont and Maine. It contains the following municipalities: Ascot Corner, Audet, Bury, Chartierville, Cookshire, Dixville, Dudswell, East Angus, East Hereford, Eaton, Frontenac, Hampden, Lac-Drolet, Lac-Mégantic, Lambton, La Patrie, Lingwick, Marston, Martinville, Milan, Nantes, Newport, Notre-Dame-des-Bois, Piopolis, Saint-Augustin-de-Woburn, Sainte-Cécile-de-Whitton, Sainte-Edwidge-de-Clifton, Saint-Herménégilde, Saint-Isidore-de-Clifton, Saint-Malo, Saint-Romain, Saint-Sébastien, Saint-Venant-de-Paquette, Scotstown, Stornoway, Stratford, Val-Racine, Weedon and Westbury.

Riding history: The riding was created in 1972 from Mégantic, Compton and parts of Wolfe and Stanstead.

In the 1992 redistribution, it gained Ascot Corner polls from Saint-François riding.

In the 2001 redistribution, one per cent of the riding was exchanged with Saint-François riding, with a portion of Eaton moving into the riding (565 electors) and Coaticook and Saint-Camille leaving (441 electors).

1973

Liberal Omer Dionne, elected in Compton in 1970, defeated Parti Créditiste's Paul-André Latulipe.

1976

Union Nationale's Fernand Grenier defeated Liberal Dionne by 2,502 votes. Grenier resigned on Jan. 7, 1980, and was a federal Progressive Conservative candidate in 1980.

Nov. 17, 1980 byelection

Liberal Fabien Bélanger defeated Parti Québécois's Richard Labelle.

1981

Bélanger defeated Parti Québécois's Noël Landry by 2,327 votes. Bélanger died while in office Oct. 2, 1983.

Dec. 5, 1983 byelection

Liberal Madeleine Bélanger, wife of Fabien, defeated Landry by 7,529 votes.

1985, 1989, and 1994

Madeleine Bélanger was re-elected in 1985, 1989 and 1994.

1998

Madeleine Bélanger defeated Parti Québécois's Suzanne Durivage by 2,336 votes. Bélanger announced on Feb. 19, 2003 she would not be running again.

2003

Liberal Daniel Bouchard defeated Parti Québécois's Durivage by 3,789 votes. Bouchard sat as an Independent during an investigation into alleged violation of election laws. He pleaded guilty to charges of using the resources of a non-profit organization for which he worked to reimburse electoral contributions and did not run again.

2007

Liberal Johanne Gonthier defeated Action Démocratique du Québec's Jocelyn Brouillette.
