Riding profile: Matapédia is located on the southern shore of the St. Lawrence River on the Gaspé Peninsula. It contains the following municipalities: Albertville, Amqui, Causapscal, Grand-Métis, Lac-au-Saumon, La Rédemption, Les Boules, Les Hauteurs, Métis-sur-Mer, Mont-Joli, Padoue, Price, Saint-Alexandre-des-Lacs, Sainte-Angèle-de-Mérici, Saint-Charles-Garnier, Saint-Cléophas, Saint-Damase, Saint-Donat, Sainte-Flavie, Sainte-Florence, Saint-Gabriel-de-Rimouski, Sainte-Irène, Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc, Saint-Joseph-de-Lepage, Saint-Léon-le-Grand, Sainte-Luce Luceville, Sainte-Marguerite, Saint-Moïse, Saint-Noël, Saint-Octave-de-Métis, Saint-Tharcisius, Saint-Vianney, Saint-Zénon-du-Lac-Humqui, Sayabec and Val-Brillant, as well as the hamlet of Routhierville.

Riding history: The riding has existed since the 1923 election. In the 1992 redistribution, it lost a small portion of the riding to Matane and gained Pointe-au-Père from Rimouski.

In the 2001 redistribution,10 per cent of the riding from the southwest corner, known as Pointe-au-Père (3,050 electors), moved back to Rimouski. It gained seven per cent of Matane. It also gained areas in the most westerly corner, including: Grand-Métis, Les Boules, Métis-sur-Mer, Padoue, Saint-Damase, Saint- Noël and Saint-Octave-de-Métis (2,012 electors).

Liberal Bona Arsenault was elected in 1960, 1962, 1966, 1970 and 1973.

1976

Parti Québécois's Léopold Marquis defeated Liberal Arsenault by 5,458 votes.

1981

Parti Québécois's Marquis defeated Liberal Aldy Lévesque by 3,267 votes.

1985

Liberal Henri Paradis defeated Marquis by 2,096 votes.

1989

Paradis defeated Parti Québécois's Guy Dupont by 3,740 votes.

1994

Parti Québécois's Danielle Doyer defeated Paradis by 3,719 votes.

1998

Doyer defeated Liberal Jean-Maurice Lechasseur by 5,715 votes.

2003

Doyer defeated Liberal Gaston Pelletier by 2,858 votes.

2007

Doyer defeated Action Démocratique du Québec's Rémy Villeneuve.
